the best piece of mail…

Five minutes.  Just five minutes to tell you about the best piece of mail I’ve gotten?  Oh wait, the best piece of mail I’ve gotten recently.  Well then, you are saved from hearing about one of the mushy love letters pictured in the background of my blog.  Or the birthday card I got in the mail last fall (mailed by none other than the man who shares my mailbox!).

Last week I got the most delightful package.  From someone I’ve never met.  But she’s read my blog posts for years.  And she and her husband went to school with my brother and his wife.  (It’s a small, small world in the Christian homeschooling community, isn’t it?!)

This sweet momma of 2 little kiddoes is also a redhead.  And also likes mineral makeup.

She sent me all sorts of makeup samples she’d collected.  And?  A whole bag of Dove Dark Chocolates.  In addition to a fun rambling letter about—what else?—mineral makeup!

(I really miss the days when we all had time to sit down and write long handwritten letters to all of our pen pals.  Somehow, email and Twitter and Facebook and Skype just aren’t quite the same as opening up the mailbox to find a thick envelope decorated with stickers and quotations…)

The mineral eye shadow samples thrilled me.  (Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve been able to wear eye shadow without it turning my eyes all red and itchy?!)  And the dark chocolate?  It’s gotten me through a few tough days since.

It was just one of many hundreds of thousands of packages sent across the country that day.  But it was from one momma to another.  Filled with things mommies love.  And somehow, it made the world seem smaller, the fellowship of Heaven nearer.

Thanks, Mrs. Postlady!  And thank you, Erin!

  1. Oh, that’s actually the way I write letters too, they always starts with an apology… very sad, but better than no letter, right? I will sit down and write a letter (w)rite away 😉

  2. Oh … how fun! 🙂

Your comment about handwritten letters and fat envelopes covered with stickers and quotes made me smile. I try and write letters rather than emails as much as possible and treasure the letters that come my way. It IS hard stealing time. I end up writing way into the night and yawning next day – and starting every letter with an apology for not writing … er … months sooner. But yay for real letters in postboxes whenever they come!

Thank you for sharing such a happy thing!

  3. Oh, I absolutely love fun surprise packages like that! And letters.

I stubbornly keep writing letters as much as I can….but it means that some poor people wait 5-6 months between replies some times, and that is an embarrassing breech of my former two week reply time unless absolutely necessary rule. 😉

Still, somehow they write back and it amazes me.

Can’t wait to hear about your make up preferences, because my skin is so sensitive, too. ( I so need to find some basics to use once in a while just for my hubby)

And I’m holding out for the post valentine’s chocolate sales. 😉

  4. I miss the pen pal letters we used to send back and forth! I always looked forward to hearing from you when we were teenagers…and no, an email definitely ISN’T the same as the mail.:-) But I have gotten awfully crummy at writing letters too.

  5. What a beautiful blessing from a new friend!
I miss the days of handwritten letters… I still do keep up with a few though not near as many as I used to!
