the “new” baby

Dear Little One,

Your big sisters are quite fascinated by you and your coming.  Ruth has decided that you are “the new baby” and Mary is “the old baby.”  I’m not sure what that makes Ruth—probably the old, old baby!

The conversations we have about you are many and varied.  Ruth loves seeing the little pictures of what you look like each time the weekly email comes from BabyCenter, reminding me how many weeks along I am and how big you are getting!

Mary is taking a more maternal air towards her dollies these days, giving them lots of loves.  But I’m not sure yet how she’s going to handle not being “the” baby.  At least Ruth reminds her often in conversation of the fact of your coming.

“What color will the baby’s hair be when it comes out of your tummy?” asked Ruth.

“I don’t know what color the baby’s hair will be, honey.”

“I know—it will be purple!”

“I don’t think it will be purple,” giggled Mommy.

“It will be green!”

“Mary, Mommy’s having a new baby sister for me!” explained Ruth.

“What if it’s a boy?” asked Mommy innocently.

“No, I want it to be a baby,” Ruth was emphatic.

Apparently boys are never babies.  And the only time Ruth has made any reference to you possibly being a boy was right before Christmas:

“Mommy’s going to have a baby and he’s going to be baby Jesus!”

(I corrected her on that one…)

“Is the baby going to be another Marsers Katers?” asked Ruth.

“How about if we name it Ruth?” suggested Daddy.

“No!  My cousins call me Baby Ruth.”

Apparently the only possible name for the “new” baby is the same name as the “old” baby.  But don’t worry, Daddy and Mommy will try to get more creative than that before your arrival.

You are making your presence known in a dozen different ways—Mommy’s growing tummy, your loving kicks, the way I don’t fit anywhere or in anything any more, our new car to hold you…but I still don’t think any of us have quite realized the fact that you will be here so very soon.  Can I really have only 13 weeks or less left?!

I love you, new baby ‘mine.  I know God made you just for our family.  And I can’t wait to see all He has in store for the five of us together.

Lots of love and prayers,
your mommy

P.S. I’m pretty sure your hair has 100% more chance of being red than being green or purple—don’t worry!

I can’t wait to hear of your baby’s arrival; it will be here before we know it!

  2. Aww … so sweet! Reminds me of y excitement when I was little and looking forward to the arrival of a new baby sister. I was always sure it was going to be a sister. And I was right every time! 🙂

Blessings for the last 13 weeks!!!

  3. What a sweet letter! Your Ruth sounds too funny. Do you have any “gut” feelings about what you’re having? We don’t find out what we’re having either, and I have yet to be right about any of them..:-)
