Weddings, Coffee, and Antiques

It’s still hard to believe I’m in the midst of planning my wedding. Our wedding! What happiness. All the details are coming together so well. The perfect dress, a free couch, the cutest kitchen table ever, and of course, the dearest groom.

I’ve been overwhelmed a few times, but only momentarily. It seems the Lord delights in perfecting even the little tiny details in our lives. I am so thankful for His provisions, large and small.

I have found, however, that one cannot plan a wedding 24-7. Last week I took time out from wedding plans to clean all three bathrooms. I came back to the guest list with a much clearer head.

Long days in town, with an even longer list, are made possible by caffeine. But when you get a headache, it’s time for a stroll through that cute little antique shop, even though you don’t really have time. Especially because you get to proudly tell the owner, “I’m marrying an antique salesman.”

But it’s when my cell phone rings, and I hear his voice on the other end saying, “Hello, Love!” that I remember all over again why I’m out on the town with a long list in the first place: I’m getting married to my best friend!

I settle back in the driver’s seat to hear about his day. Then, with a more relaxed smile on my face, I take a last sip of coffee and complete the list with a lighter heart. It doesn’t matter if the napkins match the bridesmaid dresses. It doesn’t matter what color of dress my mom wears. I’m getting married! And that is all that matters.

  1. your thoughts are beautiful. thanks for giving us un-attached girls something so apparently lovely to look forward to.

  2. Congrats! You’re getting married! The last time I logged on to your site, neither you nor I had marriage ideas, but wow, tonight thoughts of men, special to each cozy themselves in our minds.
And yes, I did enjoy my cup of coffee while he got the flat tire of his (our) car fixed!
It’s beautiful that you are preparing for marriage, my parents are having trouble thinking that I want to get married, but at the end, the Lord will get the glory for His faithfulness!

  3. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Planning my wedding is pretty much nothing but a headache. Guess I’m just not a party person. I’m more looking forward just to *being* married. I suppose I should try to sort through the anxiety and find some excitement in the planning, but with so much schoolwork to focus on right now, it’s hard.

I wish you blessings with your own wedding!

  4. Dear Gretchie Anne,

How wonderful that God is blessing you with the precious gift of marriage. There is nothing quite like making such a committment to spend the rest of your life with the man that God created especially for you – your best friend. May God continue to bless you both during this busy time of preparation and may He give you your hearts desire.

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

This is the Scripture that God gave me when He told me who my best friend was going to be, 10 years ago.

    Blessings.

  5. Oh dear. That was meant to go be in reply to the post below. Oops! Sorry Gretchen.
    Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

  6. It seems to me that the Christian fiction industry is desperately in need of a book that causes me to stop thinking about…me.

A great struggle that girls my age (and, perhaps all women) face is a tendency to obsess about our feelings and emotions. I want to be challenged to get the focus off myself and start seeing the world through God’s eyes.

If there is one kind of fiction book I am not looking for, it is another touchy/feely book about a girl and her feelings.

Hope this helps! Tell your friend “Way-to-go!” for asking all these questions before she writes. What a servant heart!

  7. Reading about your and Merrit’s happiness gives me the goose bumps! I am so happy for you both. Praise the Lord!

  8. What a wonderfully sweet testimony of God’s goodness, Gretchen! When you remain faithful to His standards during your single years, He is able to release His unimaginable blessings because you’ve waited for His perfect timing (for the PERFECT man)! 馃檪 God Bless!

  9. I agree with Jodi! The time of planning the wedding is so much fun…but it only gets better. My husband and I have been married 9.5 months, and it is more wonderful to be married, than to be planning it all! But enjoy it too…it’ll be over so fast. 馃檪

  10. SOOOOOOOO happy for you !!!!!!!! Treasure each moment — it’s a wonderful time … and yet rest assured it just gets better and better !!!!!! =)
    Love, Jodi
