maternity earplugs

When talking to an expectant neighbor dad recently, he made the comment that he’d told his wife all maternity clothes should come with earplugs, so expectant moms couldn’t hear people’s comments.  I think I’m beginning to agree.

In the past two weeks, I’ve heard it all: from “You’re popping out so quickly” to “You’re carrying so well” to “Are you sure it’s not twins?” to “What did you have when you had your baby?”

To that last one I replied, “I had a little girl 20 months ago and I’m due with another baby in 2 months!”  What does one say?  Another young mom, upon discovering that not only was I very pregnant but I had a 20-month-old, informed me I was going to have my hands full…she had two boys 16 months apart for her first, but she appeared to have waited a while before having the little 16-month-old in her arms that I was smiling at…  And then of course there’s that special group of older male customers who make irrepeatable comments, who compare their belly size with mine, and who just plain love to tease us because they are very glad to be done with the stage we’re just beginning!

With only 6 1/2 weeks left until my due date, some of the comments are not surprising.  But to think I look like I already had the baby, when I feel so huge?  At least I’m still laughing about them all…

I’m beginning to realize why people feel so sorry for me being pregnant in the summertime, though.  The heat zaps the energy out of me just like that.  And then I get tired and dehydrated and feel nauseated when I eat.  I’m doing my best to gain some weight before my doctor’s appointment a week from today.  But with half the family having the flu, the onset of “mental” flu is ever-present.  Not to mention that I haven’t felt like taking my vitamins at all, which isn’t going to help my energy level or my iron intake!

Everyone tells us what a good month September is to have a baby, though.  We just smile and say our moms thought so.

Of course, I wouldn’t mind if it was very late August…  Just so long as my doctor’s arm is healed enough from her shoulder surgery to do the delivery.  And as long as I’m far enough along (36 weeks, I believe) to deliver at the local hospital instead of the bigger hospital in Town.  Yes, late August would be just about right…  But then, Labor Day would be appropriate, too…  Until then, maybe I’ll shop for some of those maternity clothes with built-in earplugs…

  1. I can't believe people think you could be having twins! That's crazy. You carry pregnancy very well, and seem even on the smaller size.

  2. Amen, Sister! The filter between the brain and mouth often clogs on people when they see a pregnant woman and they'll say just about anything! Good thing that having a precious baby (or babies, as the case may be) is so totally worth all the swelling, waddling, trips to the bathroom, and enduring of unthoughtful commentary. Hang in there, we're almost there!

PS- I make you look teeny!

  3. I just looked back at the picture you had posted on "the week in pictures." Gretchen, I want to laugh when I think about people making comments about your size. You look great! You look like a very beautiful, healthy, young woman carrying a baby, which is just beautiful in and of itself. Don't you let those people get to you! You are beautiful! (And by the way, your hair looks really pretty. I don't think I've ever seen it that long on you before.)

  4. So sorry about the heat: no fun! Just had to say…my next sister and I are 20 months apart, and we love it!

  5. I was suppose to be September baby, but I decided August was much better. 馃槈

Can't wait to "meet" this new little person whenever they decide the time is appropriate. 馃檪 *hug*

  6. I hope Baby isn't born in August…I'm supposed to play my harp for something on the 30th! But, Baby is much more important than the harp. 馃檪
